چکیده

We present research in progress, aimed at explaining the tradeoffs between vegetative and reproductive structures in the architecture of Protea. The species of interest, Protea lepido-carpodendron, reproduces only after a fire that kills it. We aim at using a biomechanical developmental functionalstructural model to demonstrate that Protea lepidocarpodendron is adapted to the statistical distribution of fires over time.

A new species of Dialeurolobus (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) from Protea nitida in South Africa.

Dialeurolobus proteae sp. nov. is described from Protea nitida (Proteaceae) in South Africa, and from specimens intercepted on protea plants imported into the U.S.A. from South Africa. Its affinities to the other species of Dialeurolobus are discussed, and a diagnostic key is provided to identify the species of this genus.

Two new Ophiostoma species from Protea caffra in Zambia

The genus Ophiostoma (Ophiostomatales) has a global distribution and species are best known for their association with bark beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) on conifers. An unusual assemblage of these fungi is closely associated with the African endemic plant genus Protea (Proteaceae). Protea-associated Ophiostoma species are ecologically atypical as they colonise the fruiting structures of ...

Characterization of Colletotrichum species associated with diseases of Proteaceae.

Colletotrichum spp. are known to occur on and cause diseases of Proteaceae, but their identities are confused and poorly understood. The aim of the present study thus was to identify accurately the Colletotrichum spp. associated with diseases of cultivated Proteaceae. Colletotrichum spp. associated with proteaceous hosts growing in various parts of the world were identified based on morphology,...

Fungal pathogens of Proteaceae

Species of Leucadendron, Leucospermum and Protea (Proteaceae) are in high demand for the international floriculture market due to their brightly coloured and textured flowers or bracts. Fungal pathogens, however, create a serious problem in cultivating flawless blooms. The aim of the present study was to characterise several of these pathogens using morphology, culture characteristics, and DNA ...

Rhynchostomatoid fungi occurring on Proteaceae.

A new ascomycete fungus, with long-necked perithecia having central ostioles and striate ascospores, was isolated from flowerheads of Protea burchellii and P. laurifolia in South Africa and is described here as Rhynchostoma proteae sp. nov. Sequence data obtained from the small-subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU nrDNA) place this fungus with 100% bootstrap support in a clade containing the type species...
